Currently, I'm stuck on my character's backstory. I wanted to have my character have a bit of a vengeful nature towards the pirates, but I can't really figure out how to incorporate it into his backstory besides the old "pirates slaughtered his family" cliche

Maybe make it so that they captured him as a hostage during a ski taxi raid, he escaped and now wants revenge.
or maybe they raided one of his digs (be it during training with other experienced diggers and whatnot) and killed some of his team, or heck just attacked him and stole the treasure in the dig.

Little update on my character: I made a bunch of progress on his backstory, and am also working on his flying machine. I'm currently making a reasonable replica of it in Kerbal Space Program. It won't be up to scale, as the flying machine is capable of transporting up to 3 smaller flying machines and 2 ground vehicles (one built for 1 person, and one built for up to 2 people).
