As I mentioned on a post in my previous thread for Cthulhu Mythos roleplay, I wanted to make a new topic for a new roleplay that will hopefully catch people's interest this time. I'm partially more inspired to do this because Fantasy Flight Games is releasing the first version of Eldritch Horror soon and I have a copy reserved at the comic shop in town.

Anyway, on to the important details.

This is a largely serious roleplay (Small bits of comedy from time to time it okay, but should NOT be over done) taking place in the general Lovecraft Country area, and will consist of the towns of Arkham, Dunwich and Innsmouth, and the surrounding areas.

Arkham is the age old town of esoteric knowledge and dark legends, home to the famous Miskatonic University and the general 'hub' city of this roleplay's adventure. Dunwich is a curious mix of marsh and farmlands, mostly home to groups of degenerate inbred families and dilapidated housing. Innsmouth is the decaying port town, home to the Esoteric Order of Dagon and a plethora of Deep Ones and their half-human spawn. The surrounding areas are mostly forest, swamps and grasslands, but are home to a multitude of deadly beings and cultist.

During the roleplay, our goals will be to survive our travels in the area and to investigate the reason for a set of recent grisly murders. We will go above and beyond to find the cause. We will travel in sewers, on roofs, in back alleys and through all manner of unpleasant areas. We will talk with inbred families, fishmen, cultist, drug dealing foreigners and all other manner of unpleasent folk. We will use every gun, dagger and spell we can find. We will go the extra mile to make sure that the sanity of humanity remains safe, even if we lose our own!

Name: (A basic, but a name helps with interacting with the character)
Age: (Another basic, but it does help give some definition to the character)

Occupation: (Not gonna pressure you into picking a job you don't want, but this is the early 20th century, so keep that in mind)
Skills: (Any special non-magical abilities you have. Must relate to the current era and no more than five, with one relating to the occult)
Appearance: (How your character looks)
Backstory: (The origin of your character)

Rules
  • 1. This RP takes place in the early 20th century, the late 1920s to early 1940s most notably, so keep that in mind.
    2. Magic is a very limited thing here. It will drive you insane, so immediate access to magic is not possible.
    3. I will be the sole controller of both NPCs and most of the setting. Please respect the decisions I make here.
    4. Please leave a comment here if you are going to be absent from this RP.
    5. All of the basic no-nos. That means godmodding, auto-hitting, auto-blocking and related issues are prohibited.
    6. While it says five players at the moment, I'm perfectly willing to accept new players as the roleplay goes on.
    7. This is a Non-MG RP. If you still want to participate, please sign up :)

No MGs? :C Aw. Sad face. But tis to be expected. The Cthulhu Mythos is not known for its curvy, big-boobied space deities. Its known for horrible blobs of writhing tentacles and teeth and eyes. But this is the monster multiverse so I guess the name of the site does allow ANY monster.

Not much in comedy aspect. Sad. But there's no room for comedy in Lovecraft, except for some special moments. I've never done a serious RP really. There's always some silliness but mainly because I was playing as an OP character that did things for fun and giggles. In any case I've waited for a proper Cthulhu RP. This should prove interesting.

I do have one question that will determine what I do. Would you happen to need character not particularly involved with the story but sorta appears on the side. A "Mysterious Helper" so to speak. One of those guys that appear and seem to help out but their true intentions are never revealed until way later. That kinda thing? I may have an idea for something like that, but I'm probably gonna get a "No" for this, but it doesn't hurt to ask. :3

Occupation: Private Investigator
Skills:
Heightened Reflexes: He moves quicker than an average human thanks to his job always putting him in danger.
Eagle Eye: He can identify things from a distance and also spot unusual things when looking around.
Pain Resistant: Drinking too much painkillers and too much alcohol numbed his pain senses a bit.
A Strange Immunity: Though he doesn't know it yet, his mind and body has some sort of resistance to the occult's magic and the mind-shattering powers of the beasts from beyond. However, this also prevents him from using magic.

Appearance:
Has a shaved head and a short, black goatee with lifeless eyes. 5'8 high with an average build and a light brown skin.

Backstory:
Collin joined the detective business under the police hoping to make the world a better place by busting criminals. Though he did initially, he soon saw the corruption within the police that prevented him from busting the more high-classed criminals. This prompted him to leave the police and become a private investigator which usually gets himself in shootouts with gangs and mobs without actually bringing the real criminal into the light. He combats the stress and his failures by consuming alcohol and pain pills.

He now thinks about retiring from the job since his actions do more destruction than justice and changes little in the world.

I'm going to be honest. Not going to be flexible with the Non-MG RP thing. The Mythos is more known for gibbering mashes of slime then pretty MGs. Sorry

Occupation: Drug Store Owner (Best I can come up with.)
Skills: Can identify most medicines.
Minor Gun Expertise - He knows how to use some guns.
Melee Combat - He knows how to use most things lying around as weapons.
Minor Occult Awareness- He lacks this at the start but at a certain point (IE whenever the DM says) he'll gain the ability to sense occult forces to a certain degree.
Appearance: Blonde hair cut short, brown eyes, Caucasian skin. 5'6"
Backstory: He's lived in Arkham since he was 10 and took over his father's drug store. He gets involved in the story when one of the murder victims is a friend of his.

I hope this is good enough. I'm not much of a typist.

Alright more questions.

How and why are we investigating the murders if we're not the police.

Will our characters know each other in some way or is that up to us?

If I can't use the "Mysterious Watcher" type, am I allowed to use a sort of magically inclined bruiser? An example would be he faced a traumatic event in the past, causing him to shut his emotions back and hide them from others. He doesn't talk much. But he reads a lot. The event caused his sanity to sort of crack to a point he's a bit on less sane sided but magic doesn't drain his sanity as much if not at all.

How do we use magic? Will we find magical items or perhaps Tomes that hold the spells.

Some people are suspecting Mythos beings as the case, so Arkham university members would likely try to solve the murders.

I think those of us who use magic won't go full blown insane after the first spell we cast. So we'll all sort of have minor resistance.

Age: 35

Gender: Male

Occupation: Librarian at the local Arkham Library

Skills: Strong mental will- Due to most of his life he spent reading and in a focused state, his mental power has grown significantly.
Brute strength- He keeps himself in good physical shape, focusing on close combat some blunt weapon training. He lacks the grace to wield sharp weapons affectively, but knows how to use his momentum to deliver heavy blows. However he lacks experience with fire arms.
Slightly enhanced hearing- Due to most of his life being spent in the silent library he cares for, he is capable of hearing and pinpointing noises.
Familiarity with many cult/mythos related stories- Having spent so long in the library, he came across and developed an interest in the occult and learning its ways.

Appearance: Stands at 6 feet tall. Short black hair. Red eyes. Wears mainly casual wear such as his hooded trench coat.There's no mistaking he is strong thanks to his muscles, but they're not so big he can't move quickly.

Backstory: Zeke lost both his parents in a fire when he was two years old. His father died protecting him from the flames by diving out a window. He would have survived, but he inhaled too much smoke. Zeke lived most his life in an orphanage, remaining quiet and separated from the other children, he stayed in the orphanage until he was fifteen, watching as the other children were adopted and left him alone. He gained an interest in books, losing himself in the stories and creating his own world in his head. He was adopted at age sixteen to a rich family. They had an affinity for baseball and did not like that their new adopted son was so fixated on these fictional worlds. His new father forced him to play, making him practice everyday, hoping to gain a big league son. His mother showed him some compassion, sneaking him some books during the night as a reward for tolerating his father. But she still had her own selfish desires. Zeke hated Baseball, and never swung the bat. He could pitch well enough, but never swung. When his team lost because of him, his father got drunk and became enraged, beating Zeke when he got home. The mother tried to defend him, but the father beat her as well. When Zeke came to, his father was beating his wife, but she was dead. He screamed at the bloody corpse, blaming her they didn't have a good child. Zeke stood, grabbing his bat that never touched a ball. He stood behind his angry father kneeling over a bloody corpse. Zeke pulled the bat back, and with a calm expression, swung.
At the age of 19 he was homeless and alone once more. He was released from police custody due to self defense. He held onto hid bat and his books, the only things that have helped him in this world. He found himself at the library, trying to forget his problems with stories. He became friends with the elderly man who owned it. He gave him a place to stay, showed him compassion. After a year, the old man became his legal guardian, and the library was his home. But after five years, the old man died, leaving his library and all worldly possessions to his one and only son, Zeke. It was then Zeke found an old book in a box that belonged to the old man. This book was filled with...words? Zeke knew not what this book said, but he was determined to find out. He would learn, learn what this book said. Learn its story. Even if he had to read every book in the library. This unknown language, he will decipher it. He takes this book with him wherever he goes, believing it to be a good luck charm. All he has in this world now is his book, his bat, and his library.
Zeke doesn't talk much, but if you ask him to tell you a story, he will smile and talk for hours.




I apologize for the extremely long back story. I couldn't stop myself, but I was rushed. I'm hoping Baseball was around during this time period, I dont know exactly when Baseball started up.

I was thinking he won't be involved with the investigation at first, but at a point, the people investigating seek him out since he's known for studying the occult and mythos and want help.
