At the time of writing this my team is:

Ace, Growlithe LV20 (I even got a fire stone ready for WAY later when I'll evolve him.=D)
Nisa, Servine LV21 (Lucky me, a female starter.)
Rollo, Whirlipede LV22
Lewy, Herdier Lv22

Currently I'm messing around in the Desert Resort, haven't got into much difficulty in the game yet.
I have absolutely no idea what other pokemon I'll get though, probably gonna go on random like I've been doing so far.

You do know if you evolve Growlithe now you get better stats right? Techniques are what you seek I imagine though.

There are three places to get them in the game, the first chance being in the Desert Resort, where is hidden near one of the backpacker trainers.

Maybe you should just try to get a flyer, or maybe a purely defensive wall able to take physical attacks such as Skarmory (both tank and flyer), Weezing (incredibly underrated Pokémon and magnificent physical wall at the same time), Bisharp or even Scrafty.

I was going to go with either Golurk or Weezing (Ghost and Poison are two of my favorite types) as my last Pokemon because I didn't know Skarmory was in the game, and now I'm torn between the three. Dang it...

Personally I've got mixed feelings about the Golett line...

On one side Golurk has high physical attack, three inmunites (A ghost type able to troll normal types by hammer arming them is nice), and is able to learn fly.
However on the other side it has too many weaknesses, it doesn't stand out at anything but physical attack and can be rather frail.

If you need a defensive wall choose Weezing (besides it only has one weakness thanks to its ability), if you need a flyer choose Skarmory (who can also serve as a defensive wall).

Status Update!
I'm now at Lacunosa Town and just beat that Plasma Sage I forgot the name of, my team has change quite a bit since last time and I now have a full team:

Lissaki, LV39 Seviper (Caught her for the heck and decided why not.)
Lewy, LV39 Stoutland
Raadja, LV39 Sigilyph (After hating them so much in White I figured I should get one this time around.)
Ace, LV39 Growlithe (Only 6 more levels before I evolve him.)
Croctopus, LV40 Octillery (Her pitiful beginning as a Remoraid almost made me drop her though...)
Nisa, LV41 Serperior
(Interestingly enough I never raised any of those pokemon before.)
(And wow, I have a lot of pokemon with names that start with "S"...)

I ran into some trouble with Clay and beat him on the second attempt, I hate his Excadrill. >_>
On another note, I love the rival's battle theme.

Chuggaconroy used Wheezing for that very reason in his Crystal LP. It was even a Shiny Pokemon.

Back to team discussion.
I just arrived to Castelia (after wiping the floor with the second gym leader) and my team has made quite an improvement. It would be like this:

-Sieben (Servine, Male) lvl.22-> Compared to the other two starters lack firepower, but it has the potential to wreck opponents up by messing with status ailments and will be able to stall opponents once it learns Coil, besides the Coil + Leaf Blade combo looks pretty promising. (Ideal moveset for it: Leaf Blade, Leech Seed, Toxic, Coil)
-Emi (Azumarill, Female) lvl.22 -> I've been lucky with this one, the Azurill line's usefulness depends on the ability it has and I just won the game when I saw that mine had Huge Power (ability that doubles the physical attack stat), granting me a wall that can hit hard and a STAB Aqua Tail or Waterfall from a Huge Power Azumarill can kick major ass, she will stay on my team. (Moveset I have in mind for her: Aqua Tail (or Waterfall), Ice Punch, Super Power (or Return), Work Up).
-Ouka (Lucario, Female) lvl.23-> I've never been a big fan of fighting types weak to fighting moves, however I truly like the concept of a fighting type able to withstand psychic and flying attacks. Besides I've got extremely lucky for getting an adamant one (nature that raises its naturally high physical attack), she'll be my main physical attacker and if I can get to teach her a good dark or even better ghost type attack she will be able to obliterate three of the four E4 members. (Moveset I have in mind for her: Brick Break, Bulk Up, Stone Edge, Shadow Claw)
-Flannery (Growlithe, Female) lvl.22 -> I've always loved the Growlithe line, they're extremely versatile and can dish huge amounts of damage both with physical and special attacks. She will also be a permanent member of my team, the only doubt I have is when I should evolve her... If I evolve her as soon as I get a Fire Stone, she'll learn Extreme Speed. However if I wait she'll learn Flamethrower, Crunch, Outrage and Flare Blitz (I don't have moveset planned for her for the reasons mentioned).

TEMPORARY

-Violet (Herdier, Female) lvl.22-> I overlooked this line for a long time, but it ended up being one of my favorite normal type lines. She has both high defense and ofense, I would normally take it to the end but I already have two mixed walls (Azumarill and Servine, who's way bulkier than your average grass type) and I need more type coverage.
-Angelo (Flaafy, Male) lvl.22-> I'm usually a big fan of the Mareep line, sure they lack the speed that other electric type pokémon have, but they are way bulkier and more durable to most electric types. I would normally use him (like I always do on the Johto games), but I already have coverage against water (Servine) and once I get to lay my hands to rock or ice TMs I'll have it for flying (either Azumarill or Lucario). Not to mention that the nature of my Flaafy is quite the letdown (A flaafy with a nature that lowers its special attack? NO THANKS)

POSSIBLE FUTURE MEMBERS

.A flyer-> It would add coverage against fighting types (that I currently lack) and I'm always used to have one on my team since Gen I. Possible choices: Zubat, Skarmory, Sigilyph, Trapinch (Not a flyer, but flying across Unova with a Flygon must be badass).

.A psychic type-> It would cover me against fighting and poison, they usually have high special attack and can learn quite an array of attacks of different types. Possible choices: Espeon, Solosis, Sigilyph

.A ground type-> It would grant me coverage against poison and electric (I already have coverage against fire and rock), they can dish out and take huge amounts of damage and I'm quite the ground type trainer myself... It's rare for me to not have one of these in my team. Possible choices: Trapinch, Sandile, Numel, Gligar

.A dragon type-> They can dish great amounts of damages and have plenty of resistances and quite few weaknesses, it would be a good addition to any team, mine included. Possible choices: Trapinch, Horsea (Even if I'll need pokegen to fully evolve it), Axew.

Yeah, I haven't used Weezing since GSC, so I'll go with one of them, not to mention my love of Poison. (Although I prefer Muk, I use them way to much.) I'm about to challenge the elite four~!
