I just got the game the same day it was released. I've been a veteran hunter since 3U so I'm really happy with this one

I got this game as well, in a way it kinda made me sad as I was starting to have decent stuff in MH3U but the online multiplayer is too good of a thing to pass up. At least the armor I was aiming for in 3U is also in 4U so I'll still be aiming for it.

I am HR 4 at the moment on this game. In terms of story, I won't spoil much, but I have reached the High rank part. My armor set at the moment is the Gore Magala Low rank armor set. My main weapon at the moment is the charge axe since it versitility and massive damage capacity won me over. It's a really powerful weapon that if given to the right hands, makes mince meat of any monster you hunt.
I have tried other weapons too like the Insect Glaive, but it's a weapon that's more Sai's style than my own. I still use the LS and DS whenever I can though.
This game oversall so far is fun, and soon, I'll do a personal, detailed review of the game.
For those of you who want to hunt with me or Sai, please leave your FR code at the Nintendo friend code round up so we can all hunt together. Cuz it is one of the main selling points of the monster hunter games

Huh, that's interesting, I have the shagaru magala set. I like it since I can get even stronger from the frenzy virus and it takes longer to infect me wearing it

On my end I'm also at HR4, wearing a full set of ZInogre armor(with the lining changed to red) and I am using Great Swords, a weapon I'd been meaning to get into since I was still playing 3U. And I have to say, despite it losing out to some other weapons in statistical power you just can't beat how powerful it feels in the hands.
Currently I have four swords I commonly use, here's a short breakdown of them:
Red Wing: Made from Rathalos parts this one has really high power and some fire damage, its my go-to sword for most hunts where the target doesn't resist fire.I should be able to upgrade it to the Rathalos Firesword soon enough as well.
Shattenstolz:The Gore Magala great sword with a fancy german name, not much to say about it other than it has lower power than Red Wing but slightly higher dragon damage as well as 25% affinity which is the best part of this weapon, will become Dusterstolz once I get my hands on Shagaru mats.
Plesioth Watercutter+:A good weapon made with Plesioth and Mohran parts, has equal power an higher element damage than Red Wing but MUCH lower sharpness overall.
Khezu Shock Sword:A very good weapon despite it looking pretty ugly, it has the lowest power of all my commonly used swords but very high Thunder damage further boosted by my ZInogre armor to a rather impressive 300. Will be upgraded into Khezu Shock Blade whenever I get to hunting a high rank Khezu.
EDIT:Just upgraded the Watercutter.

Still stalled like a rain-washed car in front of the "hunt the Gore Megala" quest; just obtained Zamtrios armor, working on some Rathian weapons since something like 60-70% of the monsters in the game are weak to fire...

Elemental Weakness are always great to consider, but never discount the power of Status Ailments. often times i prefer hunting with weapons that can Poison, Paralyze, or put my monsters to sleep, speeding up damage or leaving wide openings for strategy. and dont get me started on Sli-Sorry, BLAST Blight. As for weapons, while i still use my old Favorite the Switch-Axe and the Great sword, Ive Become rather fond of both of the new Weapon classes, with the Glaive being the preference between the two. Its also something to note that many of the weapons have since been rebalanced from Tri to 4, with even the great sword outputting some decent overall damage with newer combos.

To get the Rage Armor set, you have to do the Apex Diablos DLC quest. IF you have a good group. The hunt is surprisingly easy.
The armor only has 4 pieces, but it has Avarice, Critical eye +2, and Weakness exploit as activated skills. Its inactive skills are handicraft of 6 points and sharpness of 6 negative points
With my good skills and slots, I managed to get handicraft as well as rationer as skills.

So, after a long break I recently re-started to play this and I finally made my way to G-Rank a few days ago, currently farming to make my first G-Rank armor as despite my two armor sets (Lagiacrus and Brachydios S) having good skills I'm starting to take too much damage for my tastes. Chose to make the Basarios X set and welp, I'm having trouble soloing it due to my guild quest getting high level.
I'm still using Great Swords but I've started to diversify my weapons, made a few Long Swords, Switch Axes and Dual Blades, one Hunting Horn and I also have an Insect Glaive on the side, although it isn't really useable at the moment due to low speed. (And I can't upgrade it further due to it needing G-Rank mats from a monster that would easily kill me at this point.)

In that case, you should go on online hunts to get the guild quest done smoother. of course unless your teammates are morons.
But hey I'm happy to lend a hand if you want

Yeah, I actually have a group of folks I usually team up with over on MGR, its just that the Basarios X set requires quite a bit of mats to make like most Everwood-only monsters and our first Basarios farming session didn't yield enough mats, so I'm trying to get the rest by myself. And if there's one thing I can be very glad for is that I didn't decide to hunt Yian Garuga instead... Heard quite a few horror stories about its G-Rank version.
Either way, I'd love to hunt with you sometime, its always nice to hunt with other people... Even though I tend to avoid playing with people I don't know or "randoms" as I tend to call them, mostly due to the stories I keep hearing about there being a lot of oddly bad players and the fact that frankly the in-game chat for MH4U is not very good.

It isn't. But Hothead, Ace and I all hunt together on (most) Fridays and Saturdays. If you ever feel up for doing us in our evening hunts you just say the word.
Ace is flexible but prefers Charge blades. Marthy like glaive and Hunting horn. I'm the Groups Gunner, but I'm skilled with blade master as well.

So, to give a bit of an update I completed my Basarios X set netting me a little more than 100 in increased defense, and now I'm just alternating doing caravan missions, hunting with friends and farming mats to upgrade all my weapons. I'm also slowly gathering the mats for the Artian X gunner set, although it'll take a while seeing I need
27 Distorted Fragments from the Everwood along with a bunch of semi-rare ores.
Also, I don't believe I got Sai or Hothead's friend codes yet, mind sharing? Mine's 2595-0269-8258. (The Mii's named Guy.)
Oh yeah, before I forget I guess should mention that my hunter's name is Raft, to avoid any confusion if I hop into one of you guys' halls at random.
