Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Ok so Square-Enix has just released Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (which is basically the revival of Final Fantasy XIV which died in a whimper not so long ago).
I just so happened to be one of the lucky people chosen to play the game during the closed beta in phase 3, and the game really is amazing. It has great graphics and I love the details that were put inside the game. Yes, I am one of those people that rolled a cat-girl Mi'quote (a lot of people may bash me for it, but I still love the way she looks - and I don't give a damn that too many people have done the same - I made my character how I liked). Anyway, the world is very beautiful and the effects of spells and even weather are just amazing. You can tell just how much work went into the aesthetic of the game alone.
One critical part of the game is the newly revamped Class and Job System. Though highly controversial (some people like it, others hate it) it is in my opinion quite excellent. I enable one to experience the different roles by simply changng out your main weapon. Because of that, it's possible to change from a healer to a dps simply by switching out some gear. There are some limitations though. You can't change classes while in combat or in the middle of an instance. For me, I enjoy this change because I have always enjoyed playing different roles. Back on WoW, I rolled many different classes so I could play any role I wanted or my guild needed me to. With FFXIV's system, I can do that on one character.
The one caveat right now is that the game is cursed by a set of errors which weren't taken care of during the beta and early release. These errors make it impossible for most people to even access the game. Ever since the actual launch, I have not logged into the game because of these errors. According to Square-Enix, the problem lies with the amount of players accessing the game. They did not expect so many people to attempt to get into the game that server realms are full and near the breaking point. Their solution is to restrict access to the game and close character creation.
Anyway, my point is this: If you are planning on playing FFXIV, hold off on purchasing it until this little problem is taken care of. It's a great game in my opinion and I will definitely play it once I get the chance. However, until Square-Enix makes it so everyone can access the game and play on the same servers as their friends by allowing server transfers and unlocking character creation, all this amounts to is a great deal of frustration and negative feelings.

To be honest, the game actually physically launched today, so there are always going to be server flooding issues, so no big surprise there.

True, but it still could have been handled better. They had some idea of how large the game would be. After all, doesn't the amount of preorders give you some kind of idea. If you are going to fill at least X preorders, you should have space for at least X players not counting the number of people who won't preorder, but buy on that day.Flare wrote:To be honest, the game actually physically launched today, so there are always going to be server flooding issues, so no big surprise there.
However, I am inclined to believe that the true issue has nothing to do with server crowding. I think it is more of just a plausible explanation handed out given the current circumstances. People are just focusing on that problem because of the types of errors they are receiving. I think that if it were just a flooding issue, there are some measures which could be taken relatively quickly. One example would be that the game has no queue to get into the game nor does it kick people for being inactive for long periods of time which could easily help to alleviate some of the server crowding.
Because of that, I think there is some other problem that is not being communicated because most people can't see beyond the "The World is full. Please try again later" Error. Not sound like a conspiracy theorist or anything, mind you.

Well, I'm pretty sure you can find quite a bit by searching through Google. I think I actually spelled their name wrong previously. Maybe it's Miquo'te. Anyway, if you've played FFXI, they're pretty much the Mithras that ran around that game.
But here's one picture I managed to find:
And this is a screen cap of my Miquo'te:

Re: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
The anti weapon swap during instances does sound good. I don't know though, the combat videos seemed slow paced so I'm very skeptical of it. There's not many good let's plays yet (since the restriction there isn't many). I loved FF11, but I remember it suffered HEAVILY from server issues and extremely difficult soloing, so hopefully that's changed.
I'm very hesitant to pick this game up, but keep me informed about it DS, maybe we can play together someday if I do.^_^

Re: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Soloing has gotten much better. One of the reasons I quit FFXI was because I couldn't do anything solo. With FFXIV, I have done pretty much all of the leveling from 1 to 15 solo. After 15, I have been playing with friends, but I still do have the opportunity to do stuff by myself. The only part that seems to require parties are the instances which they call "duties". Pretty much the duties are just dungeons with bunches of mobs that you can't kill solo.
The combat is okay. It may seem a little slow paced because there are fewer skills in the rotation, and that most of the enemies in the beginning don't have any real skills. After a while, you'll have enemies that call for you to not be in a certain "red-zone", so there is a bit of variety to it. Though I must admit it seems a little more casual and laid back than WoW. Also, leveling may seem a bit slow paced after a certain level due to the fact that places are spread out with fewer quests too.

Re: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
More casual and laid back than WoW?! That's a big statement in itself. O_O
I can't deny that the Garuda summon and the Bard class is tempting me to buy this game. I'm just very untrusting of SoE because they have ripped me off a lot in the past (including a stolen and banned EQ account because of it) and their customer service is infuriatingly bad. They actually ALLOWED a hacker to purchase items with a credit card on my account and didn't bother notifying me via my 3 contact methods about it (unlike Blizzard who does, though my Blizzard account was safe). The name was jfdskjksf fjdkkfsfsg and I saw an email thanking me for my "purchases" on Sony. Nothing touched my CC thankfully, since I removed it, but I still felt very violated and was offered ZERO compensation (unlike WoW, who gives free gold or game time).
Yeah, I have a bumpy history with SoE, and after you mentioning the awful servers, it seems like nothing has changed much on their end. Their games are actually pretty great, but their customer service, servers, and their expensive "expansion packs" makes me very apprehensive of them (though honestly, this is true with Bethesda as well). I wonder how they will compensate for the loss of "Early Access" play time if you can't even log in to enjoy that early access?
Also, do they force you to randomly pick a server like FF11 did? This caused me so many hours of frustrations at launch and the "World Pass" system was one the dumbest things ever invented for an MMO.

Re: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Well, I can't say much on the support side. So far it looks like they're just trying to sort out the server issues. I sent in a help ticket because my laptop isn't able to access the game. The specs are correct (it's actually better than my desktop) yet I always pop up with a blank launcher.
I haven't had much dealings with Square-Enix, so I don't really have any horror stories like you, but I'm hoping that all that has changed due to the growth of the MMO genre.
For FFXIV, you can actually choose which world you play on. However, at the current moment, most servers are locked down and players are prevented from creating new characters on those worlds. So even if your friend is playing on one world, the chances of you being able to create a character on that world is almost zero. It's pretty sad really...

Well, I have the game now, but I can't login and every server is completely full. None of my friends can play either. Frustrating indeed.

Yes...Square-Enix "plans" on having the server over crowding issue resolved sometime this week. Right now I am on Leviathan server. I suppose if they lift the restrictions, you can hop on and I'll be glad to show you around.

Yes, you just do a character search and send me the friend invite.Feathers wrote:Okay I'll remember that. How does the friends list work? Do I need just your character name?
Yeah, it's not a free-to-play game. The subscription is supposed to be about 13-15 USD a month.Flare wrote:I assume it costs money?

Re: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
I have not been able to play yet, because the servers are perpetually down. I'm self-obligated to make my character on the Siren server though (and Garuda on the Japan side).
There is a 1.0 GB patch added to the updater, so that hopefully was part of their efforts to help resolve the server issues. We shall see. In the mean time, all subscriptions that were registered before September 9th will receive 7 "free" days of game time as compensation for not being able to log in.
In other news, I heard some of the games music, and wow, it's great! Good old Nobou has done well.
----------------
UPDATE: The servers are up and have been fairly stable since the patch. The game is still not buyable though..I wonder what they are waiting for?
After reading some reviews on the game I'm afraid it will fall into a Guild Wars 2 / WoW clone. So far it's painfully easy and very slow paced, and that's two things I really dislike. Summoner is extremely over played so mostly all I see is millions of Carbuncles running around. >_< You would think it's a Pokemon game LOL.

Re: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Probably the reason the game is not buyable is the fact that character creation is closed on all realms. Square-Enix can't sell the games if they know that the people buying them can't play.
The game is pretty easy if you know what you're doing, so I can see where it is looking to be a WoW clone. From what I've heard, it is easy to make the level cap in a week.
I don't think summoner is as over played as it seems, at least not on my server. For the most part, it depends on where you go and what you do. If you are anywhere in Limsa Lominsa, there are sure to be a lot of Arcanists and Summoners since their guild is within that city. However, from my play out in the field and in dungeons, I can say that Archer, Conjurer, and Thaumaturge are the classes I encounter the most.

Re: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Character creation is actually open again. I know because I made a character on Exodus. The Wednesday patch fixed that. So it makes no sense they that have not allowed the game to be purchased again..
Also I'm playing at my friends house I don't actually have them game yet (may not even buy it now), but he loaned me his password so I could test drive it. My friend nearly made level 50 in two days by abusing FATEs. This is honestly a HUGE disappointment to me. There is no rewarding experience for me if the game can be abused as such. For the people that say "Well just don't abuse it!" my answer is- my friends are doing it, so I will be left solo and dragging in the lower levels. *Sigh* I have personal distaste for being the "lowbie" and "catching up". This issue has been my bane in MMOs for many years. >_<
If I ever do play it will be a Scholar, I love the fairy and healing kit they have.
