Funcom's The Secret World

Post by Aekrid »

You probably have heard of it but fell completely off your radar due to its LONG ASS development time, but now that they are slated to release sometime around this summer i am now dreading the future of this MMO as EA is publishing this title with their greedy, fat sausage fingers all over it, $49.99 pre-order, not bad, $200.oo for lifetime subscription, ... wut?

A quick summary to brief those of you that never head of it:
There are 3 warring Secret Societies:
Templars - "Structure, Discipline, Military Might"
  • Based in London, England
The Lions of the Secret War
Illuminati - "Knowledge is Power, Knowledge is Currency"
  • Based in New York, USA
Control the Wheels of Industry and Governments
Dragon - "Employ the powers of Chaos"
  • Based in Seoul, Korea
    The Puppet Masters
An MMO set in the real world where it seems as if the end of days are coming as a powerful darkness is spreading across the globe, the worlds greatest Myths, Legends, and Conspiracies are proven true.

The MMO has no defined class, you create your own special classes from 500+ abilities divided into Archetypes: Melee, Ranged, Magic
Eg. Chaos Magic, Blood Magic, Hammers, Pistols, Shotguns, Assault Rifles, Claws, etc.
You are allowed 7 Actives and Passive abilities, there are even basic Templates you can fill in if the 1000's of combinations are a bit overwhelming.
You can switch between these skill loadouts at any time and clothing choices does not affect gameplay so you can dress how you want and play how you want.

The types of encounters you can expect are fighting ancient mummies at the Giza pyramids in Egypt, hunting Werewolves in Transylvania, discovering the remains of Soviet Research Facilities built by Stalin's Paranormal Forces and their Experiments, Zombies and Ghost's on Solomon's Island, fend off the Agents of the Old Gods, re-discover the Ancient Mayan's, Vikings, the city of El Dorado, Shambhala or unlock the secrets of Stonehenge.

Talk with or even make deals with Djinns, Fairies, Giants, Vampires and Demons
"I have been to ten thousand dimensions, yet still I search for home."
"Though battered and scarred, I march on through wars, storms, and strife. I march on."

i NEVER heard of this game but it reminds me of Baldur's Gate by how you make your character. I never got lucky finding a good game with custom classes though, because people always go for the "Meta" builds eventually (best setups to win). Well there's no URL listed so time to Google I guess.. >>

Damnit! Damnit! Damnit! Damnit! DAMNIT! Why did somebody have to make a thread about this game! I want this game so motherfucking bad, but they don't make it for mac and I haven't tested out my windows emulator program to see if it can play PC games!

You're mean Aekrid :tantrum:

Wow is it really that popular? Can't believe I've never heard of this..wow! O_O It doesn't look anything special yet. There's lots of promises and expectations, so I don't want to get my hopes up like I did with the past 5 MMORPGs that I wasted money on.. >_< I'll probably pick this up though to play with you guys if it's good. ^^

It looks amazing. It's got everything I want in a game:

1. Flexibility
2. Open world
3. Eldritch Abominations
4. Multiple warring factions
5. Monsters from all mythologies
6. A horror aspect
7. It's pretty dark
8. An All Myths Are True aspect
9. PVP
10. It's urban fantasy
11. Interesting characters
12. A bunch of other things that I can't remember

Wow! I did not expect this thread to blow up like this while i went to watch pianists on youtube for 2 hours.

I love TSW looked forward to it for so long like Firefall, which btw the beta is AWESOME, but the EA logo is still making me cringe. For me the whole appeal was mythology, monsters in the modern day world. If and when my art and animation skills are good enough i want to be able to do my own series of animations of modern day crossed with myth, magic, fringe science and more than likely a few MG's :happyness:

I just hope my pre-order that i plan on placing tomorrow doesn't go to waste cause EA had to get a hold of this game.

As for what conspiracies and myths this game holds, i am going completely biased on one of their trailers though in all honesty if it isn't out in the full game its probably going to be patched content, and i think dog said we had a policy about links here so i'll just write it out:
  • The Planets are aligning
    Lilith's children are unchained
The Fountain of Youth is poisoned
    Atlantis rises
    The world is hollow
11 days are missing in the year
there is a city on the moon
There are portals in time and space
    Pandora's box is opening
    Solomon's Key unleashes Hell
The Tower of Babel never fell
    the Old Gods are awakening
the Ark of the Covenant is an Engine
    Stonehenge is a beacon
"I have been to ten thousand dimensions, yet still I search for home."
"Though battered and scarred, I march on through wars, storms, and strife. I march on."

I bought and played the game, but uninstalled it within a week. I don't know, the game just felt (and looked) so bland to me. The skills all felt the same and apart from the VERY beginning of the game, the story felt pretty unepic. That's my opinion though. I'm wondering if anyone had a better experience with this game than me honestly..because I really wanted to like this game but couldn't. I can tell that a MOUNTAIN of work was put into it, but I still think it would have been better as just a single player experience (that's what it felt like most of the time anyway...).

Sorry to hear that MM though if it makes you any happier I haven't played since the first free month I got due to RL stuff. Also TSW might be going F2P, I mean it has a cash shop to begin with, it irked quite a few people, and a statement from Funcom said due to the sales of TSW not being as good as expected they'll be focusing on smaller projects from now on.

Maybe it just resonated with me better cause I love the mythos world.

(Hi Aekrid been a while) Yeah to be honest the cash shop had me annoyed too, since I was already paying monthly. I didn't pass the free month either, but still the $60..

Ah... well at least I have Borderlands 2 and XCOM to hopefully quell the rage for awhile though if it goes F2P definitely going back. Definitely had fun with how they handled investigation missions and Dungeons, can't say for PvP since i was afraid the sheer amount of people would lag me out.

Later bosses got real intuitive with rotation and bringing back old boss patterns with a twist, though I know a lot of people griped about character customization for certain areas.

For me, I think TSW had one of the most plainest character creation ever for a P2P game. It's just one of those games that I think was amazing but could of been better if there wasn't so many frustrating bugs. The investigations were quite fun when they worked, but honestly, those bugs made the game unplayable for me. Fighting through 2 hours of zombies only to later hear a "veteran beta tester" inform you that "haha you noob, that quest has been bugged since release!" was not a fun experience. :(

For me the myth/story portion was the best part of the game. If it was a Single Player game, I would of very much loved to play it through though (and have AI bot teammates instead of humans if needed).

Apparently, you don't need to get a subscription for TSW on Steam anymore. It's a one time pay thing now.

Can you use an existing serial key from an originally bought game?

EDIT: Nevermind, it didn't work. Pfft..

I got an email awhile ago that TSw is now B2P but seems like you guys knew that already. so it's now like Guild Wars 2 a buy to play with an in-game store.
HUZZAH!

Now we can play together or even RP if you feel like it.
