Perhaps it's their way of having fun trying to possess something fictional, despite being of no physical substance.

It's just how some people show their strong like for something. I don't think it means they actually possess it. I see it as a humorous/for fun thing myself, although some people tend to misinterpret it's meaning. If it turns into actual flame wars though it's unhealthy. It's just how people show their strong affection towards a character and another way to carry on conversation. Seems to be a pretty common thing that dates back quite far as well.
