RTS What they can do?

Post by Azrael »

Over the many years of playing RTS which I have been doing for almost about over 6 years. I have wondered what can RTS evolve into the future since from playing several different types, from single unit based to squads. Not to mention cover systems, Moral systems and Power abilities. It really does make me wonder how far you can go with a game like this.

Also here you can recommend certain RTS games in general and why you think you should play them over other RTS's and what TYPE of RTS do you think they should be classified as.

I'll give an example.

Dawn of War: A Base Building RTS with Moral and basic Cover elements.

Company of Heroes: A base building RTS with a full cover system and the use of Suppression, Armour coordination and abilities.

Starcraft: A single unit based RTS with base building.

Supreme Commander: A base building RTS For the larger battles. (like in the hundreds of Tanks/Aircraft or navy ships)
Evil!? Meee!?...no! no I will not accept that, we are conditioned simply to survive, we can only survive by becoming the only dominant species. When all other lifeforms have been suppressed when we are the only dominant race in the universe. Then we shall have peace, wars will end.

I only played War2/3, Starcraft 1-2, for the stories mostly, but I don't like RTS in general because there is too much multitasking and clicking (two things that I don't really care for). I'm more of focused individual so the genre doesn't really suit me well. Oh yeah, I did play C&C Red Alert but quickly became bored with the tiny lifeless units. The Blizzard games kept me interested because of the humor and plot.

I've played Age of Empires and AoE2, mostly because of my interest in history, and the plot of the *campaigns* is fun. Still, it can be very hard because you have to pay attention to your *home area* and the *areas where you are attacking/searching/whatever* at the same time.

If I had to categorize it, it would be a base-building RTS with *beating the tar out of everyone else* (for the most part)

Oh yea I did play AoE I completely forgot. I did not get far at all on that one. I like fantasy more than Earth based settings.

What about Divinity: Dragon Commander? It's part RTS, part RPG and part turn-based strategy. Plus, during the RTS phase, you can fight in the form of a dragon!
