Strategy Games

Post by Azrael »

Ah Strategy Strategy you have been one of my favourite and most enjoyable game genres ever since I was a 10 year old kid

but the question I have to ask is what is your favourite strategy game? And this can anything from a full military strategy game like "Dawn of War, Command and Conquer", a Political, Diplomatic focussed Strategy like "Crusader Kings 2 or the Europa Universalis series", or any other game you feel is strategy focussed please name them :)

For me no strategy game has brought more fun and more repeating of game hours (550+ hours to be exact) than Europa Universalis 4, i mean with the abilities you can do in this game, this is how I changed Serbia (A small Balkan Nation) into after over 2 centuries of gameplay.

Here is Serbia at the beginning of the game in 1444

Image

The present time in the (Note under 2 centuries to go with this nation :) ) The Serbia Empire which is historically accurate :haha:

So yea please tell us your favourite Strategy game :)

Anybody here have heard of Battle Realms? No? Okay...

Well I like anything that's RTS (Real-time Strategy) so WarCraft III, Company of Heroes, Tom Clancy's EndWar, Dawn of War games, Total War (the combat part), Battle Realms and the like has got my attention.

I just wish there were more anime-themed RTSs. Most strategy games they got are turn-based RPG games which put me to sleep honestly. Sure it may be flashy sometimes but then it gets repetitive, especially if it's the most practical move.

The best I got is Knights in the Nightmare which successfully combines THREE genres.

I agree with you KillMoves There needs to be more variations or variety in the way one plays strategy, I used to be a big fan of "Go forth and send armies to conquer lands" Now days I like running a real country. I e managing the government, the diplomacy, the economy, its trade, their technology, their ideas, religion and so forth. So I would welcome some more RTS variations like Anime.

I'm just still absorbed into the Paradox Games (Swedish company BTW) with their political intrigue :3

I mean people saying "We must conquer in the name of Rome!" I simply go, "But that's been doing a million times, what about making an empire out of a small country like Albania or a great Indian Trade Empire : D

Mah nigga! That game certainly had some original gameplay I haven't really seen in any other games.

My all-time favourite, though, is Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun. It nicely conveys the post-apocalyptic atmosphere, adds a little variety in the environment with the new Tiberium lifeforms giving the map an alien feel (mostly in Firestorm) and I like some of the unit designs (the Titan, Nod Light Infantry, the Obelisk of light, the Orca aircraft, the Banshees, etc.). The game is freeware, though it doesn't seem to work as well on the newer operating systems.

Other games I have and like are Command and Conquer: Red Alert, Tiberium Wars + Kane's Wrath, Age of Empires II HD, Star Wars: Empire at War, Universe at War: Earth Assault, Europa Universalis III, Medieval II: Total War and Stronghold. I also play Might and Magic Heroes Online; it's still being tested. Their site.

I'm interested in getting Starcraft II, Napoleon: Total War, Crusader Kings II, Europa Universalis IV, Earth 2160. And if I meet the requirements, Total War: Rome II.

Well I'm just going to go out on a limb and say Age of Empires II, while most of the newer games do have aspects which make them better in some way or another, both the nostalgia factor and the difficulty keep me going back again and again.

Also outside of the technological world, I can never really say no to a game of chess (though I'm pretty shit)

Looks like Petroglyph are developing a new RTS called Grey Goo. They say they're building upon core RTS mechanics, while emphasizing tactics over micro-management (I'm guessing by micro-management they mean APM) and having factions with significantly different functions and strategies (so, like Universe at War: Earth Assault?)

After the failures of Rise of Immortals/Battle for Graxia, Mytheon, End of Nations and Victory I really hope something comes out of this.

The FAQ page limits itself by stating players would spend" less time giving orders to individual troops and more time making tactical decisions".
This could imply focusing around squads, the calling in of support powers and base-building with some tower defense-esque mechanic.
Observer wrote:and having factions with significantly different functions and strategies (so, like Universe at War: Earth Assault?)

The great thing about Universe at War was that the puny humans were no longer a faction but a resource to be collected - at least by the Evil, powerhouse, grey-like faction of the Hierarchy. It is a shame that SEGA didn´t give a damn about said title, thus lacking the proper support it deserved to tweak some bugs and issues the game had.

So far in Grey Goo we seem to have another Grey-like civilization, the ever-present humans and the titular and so called unique Grey Goo -perhaps a sort of hive mind of nano-bots.

Well, hopefully Petroglyph can nail it this time - although I would have liked to have a sequel to Universe at War. Best wishes to the successor of Westwood studios, and hope EA shit bankrupts and rots in hell.

As for favourite RTS games (which is by the way a personal favourite gender of game), the first place is for the Command and Conquer franchise (except for a certain unspeakable atrocity that takes place in a moment where the Sun is below the horizon, either near dawn or dusk - seriously, it was doomed the very moment it was given such a blasphemous title...). The fast paced gameplay characteristic of said franchise is what appeals to me apart from the apocalyptic ambient and bald dark messianic figure of the Tiberium series (and Red Alert 1), and the cheesy and over the top acting of the 2nd Red Alert.

If looking for a game with more focus in strategy and civilization development I would choose the first and second Age of Empires. Or better yet their spin-off series Age of mythology where you could command Manticores, Jotunns, Anubi, Caladria and other creatures from Greek, Norse and Egyptian myth. I wish this one had a sequel with myths from other civilizations, unfortunately its maker Assemble Studios was closed...

That´s that.

Strategy Games eh? Well.

Age of Empire III was the first game I bought at a store and I like it to this day. Although I started with Age of Empire I and like Age of Empire II as well. Age of Empire I was my first AAA game I ever played :serenade: .

Rome Total war is without a doubt awesome, Medieval 2 total war is also amazing. Unfortunately I have never played any of the others except Shogun 2 fall of the samurai which was fun as hell but kind of short :sigh: .

I also play civilization 5 but it has a lot of things I don't like that can't be fixed with mods :nono: . Also it get unstable fast as you mod it.

I play all the Mount and Blade games on and off (hard but fun).

Of all of them I probably like Rome Total war the most, i just someone would make a Monster Girl vs the Order mod for one of the total war games :happyness: .

Battle Realms is the game with Japanese style units along with The Serpent and Dragon clans, right? That game was fun but being 6 when it was released I didn't really know how operate my units well. I've always liked Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythologies, they are so fun but having nobody to play it with sucked at the time. Warcraft 3 was fun, but whenever I got to play it at my cousin's house, my cousins would never play the regular game but instead this Mod at the time known as Defense Of The Ancients which I was never good at. Spent hours at one of my cousins house playing starcraft eventually leading them to hide the game from me.

I might get Battle Realms one day. The gameplay mechanics are pretty damn original for an RTS. Though the micromanagement might be a pain to some. And it's more than 10 years old.

Sadness, no mention of the two Battlezone games... old, but good. But alas, their very genre ensured their lack of success, despite how good they were.

Oh a game I think is underrated is Halo Wars. Sure it was different from the typical Halo game, but it was still a neat RTS to me.

I forget to add warzone 2100. It's like age of empires 6 or age of the post apocalypse, it's open source and plenty fun.

I wanted to post this much earlier, but Might and Magic: Heroes VII is in development.

Currently, there are plans for 6 factions. The ones announced so far are Haven, Necropolis, Stronghold and Academy. Ubisoft are allowing us to vote on which other factions to include. (You might need an accound, though) Right now, you can vote for either Sylvan (elves) or Fortress (dwarves) to take up the 5th spot. You can still vote in the next 15 days, if you're interested and haven't done it already. (Personally I want Sanctuary)

I agree. And, you can't say it was a complete deviation from the genre the series is when it was originally going to be an RTS.
